Easy Steps For Local (And Larger) Moves

Local Moving Tips - Moving APT

Finding a city that you love, deciding to move, and touring properties, homes, apartments or rooms is a fun and exciting process.

When you finally find the perfect new place to call home it feels like everything just falls into place- then the reality hits that you have to move everything you own to this new place.

It doesn’t matter if you’re doing it alone, with a team of friends, going across the street or across the country, moving is hard. But there are so many ways to give yourself a competitive edge when it comes to making big local moves.

Local Moving Tips

No matter the distance, moving is never easy. So, if you’re making a local move a few towns over or a few blocks down the street it is likely that you are in need of some good tips and tricks to get you through the often-hectic moving process.

Of course, there are some general moving tips that are helpful to know for a local move such as:

  • Protect the things you own by packing with bubble wrap.
  • Activate all utilities in your new place before arrival; especially Wi-Fi.
  • You can never buy too much packing tape.
  • Take pictures of contents of boxes before taping them shut.

But, remember that there are specific advantages that come along with moving locally.

A big advantage to moving locally is that it is likely that you are moving close enough that your friends and family can help you move during the nighttime hours or on weekends, lightening your load significantly.

Never underestimate the value of a helping hand or two or three when it comes to moving locally. You can even start an assembly line system, where one person tapes open a new box, another wraps fragile items in plastic wrap and tissue paper, and the other tapes and labels the box.

If your network isn’t great with manual labor or not a single person you know has the time to dedicate to help you move, there are still some great ways to use the local proximity to your advantage.

When it comes to finding the best moving companies, it can be difficult to find movers with reliably good reviews. But, since you are moving locally, it will be easier to ask the people you know if they know of a good moving company.

Odds are that someone knows someone who used Company A and had a great experience. With this advice, you can feel all the more confident when making a decision on a moving company.

How Do I Prepare For A Local Move?

If you’re moving locally, then you’re in luck! There are so many more things you can do to prepare for a move when you have quick and easy access to both your new and old home.

A quick overview:

  • Measure a new place
  • Calculate roundtrip gas cost
  • Look online for free moving boxes
  • Have a backup plan on speed dial

For starters, you should go over to your new place with a tape measure, a camera phone, and a notepad and take some measurements.

Will your bed fit under the window? Does your desk still fit in the corner or will you have to buy a new one? These are all important things to know when prepping to make a local move.

If neither the bed nor the desk will fit in your new place, then those are two less things you need to spend time or money moving- and you got to know this in advance!

If money is an important thing for you to keep tabs on during the move, then consider calculating how much money it costs for you to keep gas in your car on a single roundtrip to and from your new place. From there, calculate how many trips you think you are going to need to move all of your things to your new place. This will give you a gas price estimate.

Additionally, a shocking expense that you come across during a move is actually the price of moving boxes. You can spend hundreds of dollars on boxes for a single move!

Instead, make use of websites like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace to find people giving moving boxes away for free. There are usually many people looking to get rid of their boxes so you will be able to get as many moving boxes as you need, free of charge.

Even if you’re not planning on using a professional moving company, it is always a good idea to spend some time doing research on some local moving companies with great prices and great reviews, should you decide last minute that you need extra help.

How Can I Make Moving Easier?

There are a lot of ways to make moving easier on yourself. And the best thing you can do to start is put out some positive moving energy; for every moving nightmare you’ve heard of are dozens of seamless moves that were so uneventful that family and friends forgot to even mention them to you.

The less you stress the more you can focus on the actual move, itself.

Chance favors the prepared, so before you even make an action plan, make a list of any supplies you might need. You don’t want to be in the middle of executing your master plan only to realize you don’t have the right supplies.

Some important supplies that will make your move easy are:

  • Moving boxes
  • Packing tape
  • Colorful permanent markers
  • Post it notes
  • Pens and pencils
  • Tissue paper, bubble wrap
  • Scissors
  • Garbage bags

If you make sure to stock up on these items before the planning process, then you will spend a lot more time planning and packing and a lot less time looking around and running to the store for supplies.

Another way to make your move easier is to go through all of your items and decide if you still use them enough to justify the hassle of moving them into your new home. This is an especially easy thing to do with clothing items- if you can’t remember the last time you wore it then you’re probably not going to wear it again and you’re safe to donate it.

The less you have to pack is the less you have to move, after all.

How Do I Prepare Myself For A Big Move?

There is never such a thing as packing too early – if you do it the proper way. Pack a suitcase of your must-haves and keep that to the side throughout the entire moving process.

Accept the inevitability that you will be living out of a suitcase for a few days before the big move out day and a few days after the big move-in day. This is almost a guarantee if you’re moving things over yourself or shipping some things while driving others.

It is not likely that you will be able to find and unpack every single thing you need the very first day you move in- so prepare for this.

Pack a small bag of your everyday essentials- your shower essentials, hair, makeup, clothes, shoes, and most-worn jackets should all be in an accessible place that travels with you.

Aside from the actual moving of your possessions, there are some other things you can do to prepare for a big move.

If you’re moving everything you own into a new place, then it is likely that your new place will never be fully empty again, until the next time you move. Use this to your advantage and deep clean your new home before you begin the moving process. It’s needless to say that you don’t want to live amongst someone else’s dirt, and if you spend a few hours cleaning your empty soon-to-be-home you can avoid this.

Knowing that you are moving into a clean space will put your mind at ease and make the moving process as smooth as possible.

What Is The Best Way To Pack And Move?

There are a lot of ways to pack up and move all of your possessions, and each way has some major pros and serious cons.

There is the classic ‘throw it all into garbage bags and into the trunk of my car’ approach, which works well if you are the kind of person on a budget with minimal attachment to material items. Sure, there’s a chance some of your stuff will get dinged and dented, but the garbage bag approach is a tried and true college-aged way of efficiently getting your stuff from Point A to Point B.

Another option is to hire a moving company. This is a perfect option if you are the kind of person with a healthy budget, a tight timeline, and a desire for all of your possessions to make it to your new home in one piece.

Moving companies are experts and they know all of the tips and the tricks to make your move as smooth as possible. Aside from some delegation, you don’t need to do very much more than relax once you hire a moving company.

There are so many ways to make a successful local move, and if you’re about to embark on your own local move, we at Moving APT are a great resource to help you through your journey!
