How Much Does it Cost to Hire New Jersey to Florida Movers?

Hiring New Jersey to Florida movers will cost you anywhere between $1000 and $5000, and sometimes more. Your final price depends on the amount of stuff you’re moving, and how far it needs to go.

The Cost of Moving from New Jersey to Florida

Distance1 Bedroom2 – 3 Bedroom4 – 5 Bedroom
Jersey City to Jacksonville$1200 – $2500$1800 – $4100$3900 – $7200
Jersey City to Tampa$1400 – $2700$2100 – $4800$4700 – $8500
Jersey City to Miami $1600 – $2900$2400 – $5300$5200 – $9600

Moving from Montague to Miami is going to cost you more than moving from Cape May to Jacksonville. And moving a five-bedroom house is going to be more expensive than moving a studio apartment.

Of course, the weight of your goods and the distance you’re traveling is just how out of state movers figure out a rough estimate. There are other factors that will contribute to the cost of your move, from access fees to shuttles and equipment rentals.

Check out this section to learn more about the extra costs that come with a move, and think about how you can downsize all your stuff if you want to save some money.

How Long Does it Take to Move from Jersey to Florida?

Moving down south will take you anywhere from one to 21 days, but like the final price of your move, the time a move takes really depends on the distance and amount of stuff you’re moving.

Distance Days
Jersey City to Jacksonville 2-7 days
Jersey City to Tampa 3-10 days
Jersey City to Miami  4-14 days

While most people assume a one-bedroom apartment will be shipped faster than a full house, it’s not always the case. It’s inefficient to send half-empty trucks all over the place, so movers will actually combine several moves in one truck.

This means if you’re only moving a small apartment, you might have to wait for the truck to load and unload everyone else’s stuff first.

What Factors Affect the Cost of My New Jersey to Florida Move?

Moving costs money. How much money depends on a number of factors. Read on to see some common fees and factors that may affect the overall price of your move.

  • Weight and distance. This is how long distance movers decide how much your move will cost. The more stuff you’re moving, and the farther it all needs to travel, the more you can expect to pay on moving day.
  • Time of year. Summer is peak moving season. You’ll have to compete with families and students taking advantage of their vacation time to move, and good ol’ supply and demand means you’ll be paying more for movers.
  • Long carries. Your movers are going to be carrying a lot of stuff to and from that truck, and any distance over 75 feet counts as a long carry. Long carries typically come with an extra fee, so if you’ve got a long driveway, plan accordingly.
  • Elevators and stairs. Using elevators means playing tetris with your furniture, and stairs can be difficult to navigate when you’re carrying a couch. Just like long carries, stairs and elevators are an extra challenge for your moving team. These challenges cost more.
  • White glove service. White glove service is a specialty option for all of your valuables, fragiles, and finery. Not every moving company offers white glove service, so make sure you call ahead to see if it’s on the menu. And of course, be prepared to pay a little extra.
  • Insurance. Paying for extra insurance is optional, but we recommend it. It’s great to have in the (rare) event that anything is broken or lost in transit, and it can also cover the cost of injuries that occur on your property. Ask in advance about your options.
  • Packing. Boxing and storing up all your stuff is a pain, and not everyone has the time or patience to deal with it. If you’d like your movers to deal with the packing for you, you may have to pay a little extra – but it’s money well-spent.
  • Storage. Sometimes a move isn’t as cut-and-dry as we’d all like. It can be complicated figuring out the exact timeframe for your move, and sometimes we don’t always know whether we’ll have room for our stuff. Storage can help, but it does cost extra.
  • Gratuity. Your movers are carrying your stuff down long driveways, up flights of stairs, and across the country. They deserve a tip, and actually most moving companies expect them. Budget out 15-20% of your move’s total cost for a tip split between your team.
  • Taxes. Taxes, taxes, taxes. As with literally anything else, paying for moving services means paying taxes. In Jersey, you can expect to pay between 6% and 7% of the total cost of your move.

There are other additional fees that can affect the overall price of your move, so always be sure to communicate with your movers ahead of time. The last thing you want is a surprise hit to your wallet on moving day, especially when it’s a long move from New Jersey to Florida.

  • Industry-Insider Info: We see what the best companies in the industry are doing.
  • Mystery Shopping: We call and pose as complete strangers to keep movers honest.

Licensing and Accreditation

  • Arbitration Program: We ensure movers provide arbitration for lost or damaged items.
  • Active Claim Department: We monitor how quickly movers help with compensation.
  • Safety Record: We get up-to date safety information about accidents and inspections.
  • Moving Insurance: We make sure movers provide full or released-value protection.

Client Feedback

  • Video and phone reviews: Client testimony tells us which movers are worth your time.
  • Online surveys: We read about each completed move to see how movers perform.

As a moving broker, Moving APT deals with movers on a daily basis. We negotiate for our clients, and we ensure movers always honor their contracts. It’s how we help you get moved, and it’s how we maintain clear communication between clients and moving companies.

More customers for better movers If a mover is exceeding expectations, we send them more business. If a mover needs to improve, we don’t. It’s simple.

Jersey to Florida FAQ

What is the cost of living like in New Jersey compared to Florida?

Aside from having great weather, Florida is actually cheaper than New Jersey, too. The cost of gas and groceries may be pretty similar (with Jersey consistently a bit more expensive), but the real kicker is real estate. A typical family home in New Jersey is valued at about $470,000, while the equivalent in Florida is around $313,000 instead.

How do the schools in Florida compare to the schools in New Jersey?

According to US News and World Report, Florida’s education outclassed New Jersey’s in 2022. Florida has more schools than New Jersey, and they also had a higher proportion of schools make the top 25% of US News and World Report’s best high school rankings.

What is a binding estimate?

When you contact a mover, they’ll give you a moving quote, or estimate. Estimates tell you how much you’ll pay on moving day, but there are a few different types.

  • Binding estimates. These are set in stone. When a mover issues a binding estimate, what they say is what you pay. There are some exceptions (for example, if you suddenly add a pool table after they issue the estimate), but binding estimates are concrete.
  • Nonbinding estimates. Unlike binding estimates, if a mover gives you a nonbinding estimate, it means they can adjust the price up until (and sometimes after) moving day. Don’t panic. They can’t add more than 10% of your total moving cost.
  • Nonbinding, not to exceed estimates. With a binding estimate, you’re paying a flat rate that can’t be adjusted – even if the job turns out easier than expected. Nonbinding, not to exceed estimates can be adjusted, but the price moves down.

What items can’t be moved long distance?

Don’t expect your movers to transport anything flammable for you. They can’t carry anything that’s a potential fire hazard, and they can’t transport anything that’s pressurized like aerosol sprays or fire extinguishers.

Plants are generally on the do-not-move list, and if you’re transporting firearms you’re better off sending them to Florida through an FFL. Always check in with your movers to be sure of what they can and can’t move for you.

What is the cheapest way to move?

The cheapest way to move from New Jersey to Florida is doing it yourself. However, DIY isn’t as simple as it sounds. You’ll need to rent a truck, pay for gas, pay for food, and pay for lodging. At the end of your move, you may have saved a few bucks, but sometimes the savings just aren’t worth the extra stress. Consider comparing the costs and benefits of DIY moving to hiring professional movers in New Jersey to make an informed decision.
