California Moving FAQs
Moving in California can take anywhere from 1 to 21 days. There are a number of different factors at play here, but like the price of your move, it all comes down to the miles and the mass.
Drivers aren’t allowed to clock more than 400 miles of interstate travel per day. That 400-per-day rule is a good way to figure out the baseline for your move’s duration. But aside from rules and regulations, movers typically bundle smaller moves together to avoid wasted space in a truck or trailer. It keeps costs down (and your stuff will be safely separated), but there may be delays for pickups and deliveries if you’re just moving a small amount of belongings.
Packing supplies will usually cost between $50 to $150, but there’s no guarantee your nearest big box store will have what you need in the first place. If you’re really desperate, you can ask around at office parks, bookstores, and even liquor stores. They usually have sturdy boxes they’re willing to part with. (Or, you can skip the whole hassle and pay for packing services.)
Unless you’re paying for full-service packing (which is always a good idea), you should start packing 2-3 months in advance. Start with your least-used stuff, and slowly move up to your more frequently-used items. Your seasonal decor and artwork should be boxed up first, and your deodorant and toothbrush should be boxed up last (we hope).
Most people think they can tough it out and do their own packing. Most people also end up frustrated, wasting a ton of time, and then getting even more frustrated when they learn that since they packed their own boxes, they don’t qualify for full-value moving insurance.
Packing services may seem like a luxury, but most packing is priced pretty competitively (just a couple hundred bucks, unless you’re moving a big house or tons of stuff). It’s way more convenient for you, and since movers only offer full value protection if they do the packing, you’re also unlocking insurance coverage that’s way better than the $0.60-per-pound bare minimum.
