9 Strange Items Moving Companies Are Afraid to Touch

Not everything you own will be accepted by your movers. Firearms, perishables, chemicals, and live animals are typically not allowed to be loaded onto a moving truck.
What Items Will Movers Not Move?

In this article

Not a huge surprise, but there are some things your movers will actually not transport. Whether it is items like explosives or firearms, you may have to move them yourself.

There are also some household items they won’t move like certain chemicals or liquor and one cosmetic item that may surprise you.

1. Guns

To nobody’s surprise, you may actually find it difficult to get movers who are comfortable with handling your firearms.

As you probably guessed, they would be a huge liability regardless of how safe you are with them.

You also have to think about the moving and handling of your guns during transportation. If anything were to go off during the move that would be a terrible experience for your movers.

To make driving your guns around easier, you might try investing in a gun safe or some kind of case.

2. Food

You are better off finishing those leftovers rather than putting them into a hot truck with the rest of your stuff.

You are going to have a hard time convincing your movers to take any perishable items, especially on longer hauls.

Anything like milk, eggs, or butter should be eaten or tossed, however, nonperishable food in cans will most likely be totally fine.

If you don’t want to waste you can also donate any good food you won’t eat to those who are less fortunate like at a local shelter.

3. Plants

Most states take bringing any plants into new territory very seriously. If you plan to move to another state, you are probably better off leaving your plants behind.

Alternatively, plants are typically fragile, and shoving them together with everything else for a bumpy truck ride is probably not the best idea for keeping them alive.

You’ll want to check the list of banned or invasive species before your move so you don’t get nabbed at the border.

4. Pets

Speaking of living creatures, movers are not going to assume responsibility for your pets.

Moving trucks are not climate-controlled and having no fresh air could cause issues for your animal. Not to mention, imagine if something fell over and landed on your pet. The movers are not checking on the payload every few miles.

This goes for smaller pets as well like hamsters. Moving companies are not going to allow you to pack them on their truck.

5. Fireworks

Although they need a flame to ignite, you are out of luck trying to move your leftover New Year fireworks with a moving company. (Why would you have any leftovers anyway?)

Fireworks contain black powder and other highly flammable chemicals that are too big of a risk to transport.

Not only that, but each state and even counties have its own laws regarding fireworks. So moving them for you is a very risky move.

6. Liquor

If you need an excuse to drink, here is a great one.

There are some risks involved when moving alcohol. Many states actually limit the amount you can transport for personal consumption.

And staying on theme with volatile substances, alcohol is flammable. If anything should catch fire you could be stuck with a hefty bill on your tab.

7. Hazardous materials

Even some cleaning supplies movers are reluctant to take for you. That is because it can be unsafe for them to handle without proper equipment.

But also, if something were to leak it could cause damage to your items. It could also produce toxic fumes which can be harmful to anyone involved in moving your items.

8. BBQ Supplies

Unfortunately, your barbeque setup is not going to make the cut of acceptable items to take on the moving truck.

Well, the grill itself will be okay, but from what we mentioned before you can probably guess why things like lighter fluid and charcoal would not be allowed.

You can also understand why any type of pressurized container like propane or scuba air tanks would be prohibited from loading on a moving truck.

9. Nail Polish and Remover

The items that may come as a surprise are nail polish and nail polish remover.

Due to them being highly flammable, you can have a difficult time trying to get onto a moving truck. During a long drive, the back of a moving truck can reach extreme temperatures.

If you are stuck and have no other way to get your polish to your destination it may be easier to just buy new ones.
