Read on to learn everything you ever wanted to know about this blossoming college town.
Low Cost of Living
To start things off, compared to the rest of the country Lincoln’s average comes in on the cost of living index at 92.6.

It beats most states in housing, utilities, and food, but gets edged out in the healthcare, transportation, and services sectors.
The Meats
Lincoln is right in the heart of America’s beef industry. For those looking for high-quality meat, you will be happy to hear Nebraska’s number one industry is agriculture.
The state receives over $6.5 billion annually from its cattle sales which is made evident by the local’s enthusiasm and support for its meaty culture.
Having access to some of the freshest cuts of meat in the country, you are sure to find a taste for some great steaks and barbeque.

Job Market
Lincoln’s job market is quickly expanding with many roles to pick from. Areas like government, tech, finance, healthcare, and education can all be found here. This makes it a healthier market than other similar-sized cities.
The unemployment rate is also incredibly low. With many employers like the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Bryan Health, as well as some local companies like Nelnet, Emeritus, and Kawasaki Motors.
It is also pushing its weight as a technology hub being nicknamed the Midwest’s “Silicon Prairie”.
Not So Great Pay
Don’t get your hopes up too high if you plan to make it big in Nebraska. Although the job market is attempting to grow stronger in the area, unless you plan to be a master rancher (and have the skills to do so) you probably won’t be seeing millions in your bank account.
The reality is, that it can be difficult to make a decent living. The average income is around $30k, which is 8% lower than the national average.
About 12% of residents live in poverty, and long-term employment is essentially limited to agricultural or food processing.
Limited Entertainment
The entertainment department mostly revolves around sports games, dining out, and occasional events. The locals will often joke about cattle and corn watching.
For a little bit of a bigger pool to pick from, nearby cities like Omaha, Topeka, and St. Louis are not too terribly far away.
Things To Do
Don’t totally count Lincoln out for fun things to do here, with activities for both the outdoorsy type and the city stompers. Lincoln comes with over 60 walking trails, 136 parks, and some recreational areas like Holmes Lake and Pioneers Park.
The city is also pretty cultured in art with many museums, galleries, and theaters. This includes the Rococo Theater, Sheldon Art Gallery, and the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
For some downtown vibes, the Haymarket district has many interesting shops, bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Four Seasons
If you are a fan of experiencing all four seasons, Lincoln has you covered and includes the expected activities associated with each.
- Spring is fairly mild with temps in the 40s to 60s, great for biking and farmers markets, but can experience some pretty nasty thunderstorms.
- Summers are hot and humid with the thermostat reaching anywhere from the 80s up to over 100 which means you will want to invest in a pool or make some friends who have one.
- Fall will bring all the beautiful hues of oranges yellows and reds and temperatures perfect for bonfires, pumpkin patches, and visits to the apple orchards.
- Winter is cold and snowy often coming down below freezing bringing in winter storms and icy road conditions making it necessary to bundle up and dig up your tire chains.
The Commute
If you hate traffic then you will love living in Lincoln. With a breezy average commute of 20 minutes, theres just enough time to finish your coffee and catch up on the news.
The city’s efficient and well planned out city map makes it nearly impossible to get from point A to point B in less than 25 minutes.
For you, that means more time outside of work and can enjoy what the city has to offer.
Landscape
If you enjoy climbing mountains, sandy beaches, and ocean shenanigans, Lincoln’s flat lands may be a bit lacking for your tastes.
However, the city’s smooth terrain is great for walking and things like cattle herding which offers a bit of country charm.
For those who prefer more exciting ecosystems like mountains and dense forests, you’ll have to make a trip out of state. But anyone who enjoys prairies and grasslands will feel right at home.
College Downtown
Being a college town, downtown caters to the younger demographic with many bars, clubs, restaurants, and CBD shops.
The city especially comes to life on game days, essentially becoming a giant tailgate in honor of their home team the Huskers.
If you prefer a quieter lifestyle you can still enjoy Lincoln’s suburbs as the inner city tends to get very lively, especially during events.
What Is Your Plan
Lincoln sounds like it does its best to offer an array of interesting things to do for a prairie town in the heart of America’s Midwest. I personally would like to experience some of that premium beef we talked about and will it be a destination stop if I am ever in the area.
